What is Problem Based Learning (PBL)

Problem-based learning is a pedagogical practice used in many medical schools. Usually under the guidance of a facilitator, students are arranged into small groups where they engage in several discussions to review a clinical case. Students are responsible for establishing learning goals as well as spending time researching the clinical case as they prepare to contribute during the next class sessions.

We encourage you to use a variety of resources and explore different professional opinions.  As you further your medical career, developing great habits for life-long learning is essential.  Use these cases in your problem-based learning sessions to become familiarize with an array of resources to support this activity.

Steps in PBL Work

  • Explore the topic- gather information and prepare list of learning objectives
  • State what is known- as a group, discuss what is known about the patient scenario and list what is information is lacking
  • Research-using the medical library, find resources and other information to create a compelling case presentation
  • Investigate solutions- based on evidence, list possible interventions to address patient's problem
  • Present and support your intervention- list possible solutions to the patient problem
